From the Evening Standard yesterday evening I read an article about the Portrait Prize 2010. What really stood out for me in the article was about an artist Daphne Todd from Tunbridge Wells, who painted a portrait of her mother. Not unusual, as she had painted her many times throughout her life. Except, on this occasion she painted her portrait after she had passed away.
Daphne said 'It's got its own beauty. Dead bodies are not entirely still, they are changing'.
I was really taken by that sentence and also by her idea of painting someone she loved and knew so well, in celebration of her life - during and after.
Her work has been shortlisted for the BP Portrait Prize - the exhibition runs from 24th June to 19th September and admission is free.
